I saw this on sale at gamersgate and it said right there that there was LAN fun to be had. I only have the old version of it installed on steam, so when I tried to back that up to install on my other computer, it kept telling me that I already had it installed, but couldn't install it.
I have the worlds worst internet and I can't play on the internet, let alone download the new version which I can't play anyway. How can I install the old LAN version on steam? Can I just move over a folder or something?

You should be able to play the old version, altho the online features will not work. You will need multiple steam accounts each, with its own version to get lan to work, but thats in theory because i have not tested lan on steam version only on original disk version.

I know that disk version have LAN. But steam version?

I had Company of Heroes on my main PC for a long time, it has the original version that I got from Steam when I bought it. Then, sometime between that happening and just a couple days ago, they took away LAN support. People who bought the game after that, like I did, can only download the 'Steam version' which doesn't have LAN. If I had suitable connection to play online I wouldn't really mind, but I'm stuck now.
[EDIT: Oh, I bought a second copy to install onto my laptop (which is on another account) so I could play it with my nephew when he comes over. I kind of got him into WWII games and thought Company of Heroes would be a bunch of fun]

I know this is an old post, but to set some things straight:
    1. There are 2 'editions' of CoH.
      1. Retail boxed copies
      2. Steam edition
    2. Both 'editions':
      1. can update to any version, including the Steamworks versions (2.700.x)
      2. come with Product Keys (correct me if I'm wrong here, I don't own the Steam version and may be wrong about that one)
    3. Only the retail edition allows LAN from one copy
    What I mean by 'Edition'
Basically, I mean source editions. By source edition, I mean the copy of the game that you purchase. If you bought a retail boxed copy (say, from a store), then that came with CDs, with the gamefiles on those CDs. Those game files make up your copy of the game: That is what you access when you go to install the game, therefore making that a source edition (That is your 'source' where you get your gamefiles from).
Likewise, if you bought your copy from Steam, then the gamefiles sent to you from the Steam servers is what you have access to when installing (and reinstalling) the game.
These source editions as I call them are differentiated and separate from each other simply because of one difference: the slightly different gamefiles on the Steam edition that make it so the Steam edition is tied to Steam.Since, of course, that's how Steam works. So the Steam version is tied to Steam, and the retail copy is free and not tied to anything.
    • Note: You can obtain an additional Steam copy with your retail copy by entering your Product Key from your retail copy into Steam, which will then grant you a Steam copy.
    What I mean by version
I mean the game version/patch, ie 2.602, 2.700, 1.71. Separate from edition of course. Both editions of the game can be at any version, granted you have the patch files to do that.
There are basically two sets of patches: pre-Steam, up to 2.602, and then the 2.700+ Steam patches, after the game moved to Steamworks. So far the 2.700.x patches seem to almost entirely just be networking ones, for the transition from Relic Online to Steam. Also, the 2.700.x patches removed LAN.
Note: Pretty sure Relic has removed CoH1 patch downloads up to 2.602. The official mirrors were taken down a while ago as far as I know. 2.700+ seems to be all they're going for now.
    LAN
Currently, the Steam edition does not support LAN with a single copy of the game. Everyone that you want to LAN with will need their own copy of the game. With the retail boxed copies though, that are free and not tied to Steam or anything else, you can feel free to LAN with as many people as you want with just your one copy. (Relic, please correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure this is how it works).
    • Note: I don't actually know if you're allowed to keep playing old versions of Steam games without updating (I'm talking about when Steam has logged a patch for that game on their servers). If memory serves correctly, the answer is yes. But if otherwise, that would mean that Steam editions of the game would not be able to LAN.
