MÁG (later known as Magomobil) stands for 'Magyar Általános Gépgyár Rt' (Hungarian General Machine Factory Corp.), the most important Hungarian vehicle manufacturer before World War II, based in Budapest. Its roots date back to 1901, when Podvinecz&Heisler (a company created by two young entrepreneurs, 25-year-old Dániel Podvinecz and 24-year-old Vilmos Heisler, started assembling AustrianLeesdorfer cars - themselves being FrenchAmédée Bollée cars built under license.

More successful was their later Phönix model, a GermanCudell model built under license. The company was reorganised in 1912 and the automobile manufacturing division became the Magyar Általános Gépgyár Rt in 1913. Production was boosted by orders from the Post, the Army and other organizations – and outperforming other Hungarian manufacturers, including Röck, Rába, MARTA etc.- as the government tried to support local industry. MÁG introduced several models, designed by János Csonka, Jenő (Eugene) Fejes and other talented engineers.

Aircraft industry[edit]

In 1916 the manufacturing company Lohner-Werke of Vienna was given a contract from the Luftfahrttruppen to design and build a single seat fighter based around the 185 hp (138 kW) Austro-Daimler six-cylinder inline engine. Work was begun on the first airframe, serial number 111.01, and on 5 September 1916 the Lohner 10.20 was unveiled at Aspern. It was a single-bay biplane with equal-span.

World War I brought new business for the company, as it produced airplane engines under Austro-Daimler license, as well as complete airplanes. The Mág produced cars until 1915, when the company decided to build aeroengines and aircraft to support the war efforts of the country. It established a big new aircraft factory at Mátyásföld.^[1]

Return to the car industry[edit]

After the war new car models appeared, including the Magomobil in 1924. By the mid-1920s it was apparent that MÁG is not competitive on the Hungarian market. Its financer and owner, the Hungarian General Credit Bank tried to find a buyer. In the meantime another new model, the Magosix was introduced with a 6-cylinder engine. It used many American parts to compete with the locally available American models but to no avail. The economic crisis of 1929 was the last straw, and the Bank pulled the plug. A total of 2000 passenger cars, 150 trucks and buses, as well as 1000 automobile engines had been produced.

History of the Marque

The Austrian firm of Puch built their first motorcycles in 1903, and by 1912, the year in which company founder Johann Puch retired, the factory was producing over 300 motorcycles and automobiles each year, along with some 16,000bicycles. Business slowed considerably after the end of WWI, and in 1934 they merged with Steyr and Austro-Daimler to become Steyr-Daimler-Puch.

After WWII they built two-stroke offroad and road bikes of mainly 125, 175 and 250cc, and also a range of scooters and mopeds with smaller engines. Many of these were marketed in the United States by Sears Roebuck as Allstate machines.

Puch MS50D 1973
Hi, I wondered if you could help with this? With regret I am looking to move on this lovely example of a Puch MS50D. It came to me from a friend who acquired it at a funeral of all places.
It was first registered in May 1973, did about 5000 miles up until 1984 and is currently on 5900 ish.
It appears to have been mothballed for 20 years from 1994 to 2013, since when it has been put back on the road, which required little more than cleaning the spark plug and fuel lines. I use it most years, but the last two summers I have been otherwise engaged, so the last MOT ran out in April 2018.
If somebody does want to take it on I can organise an MOT if required. It's quite a nice experience as the local bike shop was the original vendor and the owner remembers it from when he started at the shop in the 70's. As you can imagine he is a sympathetic tester, but to be honest, there isn't really anything to pull it up on, everything works, (apart from the cut off switch) and it runs really nicely. The tank could probably do with a liner, but I've never got round to it, I just whip the fuel filter off every so often and give it a clean.
I think the charm of the bike is that fact that it is totally unrestored. It has obviously been kept under cover its entire life, and whilst after nearly 50 years there are plenty of little rust spots there are no structural issues, the paint and chroming is all original. The only parts I have changed are the carb float, (which I replaced when the original brass one sprang a leak and I botched the repair; the replacement is a plastic version which had to be fettled slightly to fit), and the fuel tap (Keen eyed may have spotted the plastic tap, I still have the original brass one), so it is pretty much as close to original condition as one could wish, possibly even including the tyres?

We are trying to obtain a V5C for the above vehicle. The DVLA are claiming it's never been registered (despite the tax disc still being on the bike). So, they've suggested checking if we're entitled to the plate on a non transferable basis with a vehicle owners club. However, the list they have provided doesn't seem to have a relevant club. Also when i searched for what should be the vin# it was located on the right instead of the left. So i wanted to know if this was an official Puch bike.

I could really do with some advice if possible please? I have a Puch MS50V that I purchased new in December 1972 and used for the year until I purchased a mini van. I kept the moped as the supplying dealer offered so little compared to what it cost new! I have decided to put it back on the road but never registered it with the Dvla when they changed to computerised systems. Today I have learnt, that it will be registered with a Q registration unless I can find proof of its age?? How can I do this? Is there anyone within this group that can identify this bikes age please?? Maybe fortunate to have records dating back with chassis numbers etc. Look forward to any advice, help or comments. Ed. Strong similarities to the 1978 model Sport, except for the seat mount. It seems likely that this custom is based on a model similar to, but not the same as, the 1978 Sport.
Further research leads me to believe it is a Kromag, built using largely Puch components and sold by Sears 1977-78.

I have rebuilt a 1965 DS60
but the lights go very bright when revved and blow bulbs. Should there be a ballast resistor ? ..and have problems with the lights going so bright they blow even 12v 55w bulbs. I have nothing left over so cant understand it.

My grandfather had PUCH motorbyke in year 1941.It was made in Germany.Unfortunately,do not know the model.Interested how much the new model of PUCH was worth in those days.And how much the same old model would cost nowadays?

Unfortunatelly do not have any images.
All I know is that grandfather had it in 1930-es. all way to 1941.
When a German officer in occupied city he lived ,not far from Austria,stole it from him.

Identification of a Puch moped

I need to identify the Puch moped that we bought at an auction. I can find no identifying marks or numbers other than 5352794 which is on the post under the seat. It is burgandy in color. Any help to identify this moped would beappreciated.

Parts list and engine layout
Puch Rough rider turbo
I have got a 50cc ouch rough rider turbo which my mum and dad let me have when I was young. It was sat in a shed for years Previously and I managed to start it. A few weeks later it stalled and I think the engine is flooded and some of theparts are rusting and the kickstart is jammed
I am currently doing a level 1 imi in ligt vehicle mechanics at the college in kings Lynn Norfolk and my tutor has allowed me to bring the bike in to work on and hopefully fix

I was hoping to find the engine layout and parts on the Internet but could not find it anywhere and wondered if you could possibly email the list of parts and engine layout so I can rebuild the engine replacing the parts that need to bereplaced.
